USC's 31 to 33 loss to Oregon State is the upset story of this season, as The Trojans have not lost since it's triple-overtime defeat to Cal in 2003.
Melissa's MySpace Blog says it all:
The Run is Over
The run is over....
There was the perfect season of 2003
There was the perfect season of 2004
and then 2005....
and now.....our first season loss...
I still love ya....but its just not the same anymore...
............USC.................This event has USC fan Jim1981 over at the
USC Scout Message Board singing these blues:
While part of this analysis is directionally correct, this loss came down to a few challenges:
1)The d-line once again was overmatched and outplayed by the o line of OSU. The six sacks were forced by blitzing (except one- by Ellis) The dline's inability to pressure the QB without blitzing opens up the middle of the field for short passes. OSU took advantage of this and exploited it.
2)Four turnovers is difficult to over come.
3)Inability to score on two redzone chances (PIC and the turnover on downs)
4)Special team play was poor. Despite the blocked FG, our kick-offs were short and coverage was poor, and one punt returned for a td. The other punts were shanked. This gave OSU great field position and combined with the turnovers was the dagger.
5)Booty hot and cold play. A number of poor throws to receivers who are double/triple covered. Several great throws, where he was on the money.
Tough to blame this loss on Jarrett, yes he did not appear to give a strong effort on the pic; But he made a couple of key catches. The biggest surprise was the inability of the defense to stop the run. When a second string OSU rb puts a 100 on our defense, we have big problems.
Need to fix the problems or we may lose more than we win over the last 5 games. Jim1981's view is typical of a number of USC fans on the board. Which begs the question: which games will they lose? I'll pick Cal. If Cal walks into LA and clobbers USC that will place the Trojans in danger of going to a lesser bowl game, and Cal in the National Championship picture.
